DIY Epoxy Floor Coating: Can I Epoxy My Garage Myself? Yes! But…

Can I epoxy my garage floor myself - A video about DIY Epoxy Coating

DIY epoxy floor coating: a tempting project for many homeowners willing to invest time and effort in this endeavor. Can I set up my own epoxy coating in my garage and my patio to save money, or just because I like to do things myself. This video offers solid advice from a professional with years of experience under his belt.

Dallas, Project Manager at Motorcity Floors and Coatings, covers the pitfalls of a DIY epoxy floor coating project.

“You can do anything you set your mind to, I’ll say that. YouTube is great. You can learn a lot of cool things on there, but when you’re doing coatings, you can’t really watch YouTube and do it at the same time. So it’d be preferred if you have someone experienced with you if you are going to try to do that.

Just from experience, you have about 30 minutes to do whatever you’re going to do with the coating before it starts to set up.

And there’s a lot of time, there’s a lot of effort involved in cleaning out the space, cleaning the floor, and prepping it. If you don’t install it properly in the right time, it can lead to a lot of issues. And it’s not if, it’s when those issues will happen.

And then at that point (if the install wasn’t done correctly), depending on your expectations and what you wanted the space to be, it’s not up to what you want: you may have to call a professional like us at MotorCity and we’re going to have to charge you a little bit more to remove that coating and then do the job as well.

So not saying that is going to be the case, but if you don’t have much experience doing it, it’s a really expensive paint [epoxy or polyurea and polyaspartic] and you don’t have a lot of time to work with it. So if you don’t have experience, I’d probably advise against it.”

Motorcity Floors and Coatings has been setting up floor coatings in residential, commercial, and industrial applications for many years in the Detroit metro area. We have seen many scenarios, many applications, and tested many types of floor coating material. We moved away from epoxy and into a combination of polyurea and polyaspartic floor coating for many reasons, including longevity, speedier application, better resistance to typical hazards, etc. Call our technical department to discuss your project: you will receive solid advice from professionals like Dallas, with many years of experience under their belt.
