Floor Coating Installation: Which Material Is Faster to Install? Epoxy? Polyurea?

Jake Lowry of Motorcity Floors and Coatings discusses which floor coating type is faster to install

For many homeowners, installing an expoxy floor coating in their garage (or other types of garage floor coatings like polyurea coating) is an investment and can be an inconvenience. Floor coatings take time to dry, and during the coating and drying process, their garage can’t be occupied at all and no one can walk on the floor. Even if the flooring contractor proceeds quickly, there is some noise nuisance due to the machinery used to grind the concrete to prepare it for the coating.

So what type of floor coating is faster to install? This is what Jake Lowry, CFO of Motorcity Floors and Coatings has to say:

“Mainly, when we’re looking at floor coatings, we’re looking at the three different types: an epoxy floor coating, a regular sealer, or you’re looking at a polyurea & polyaspartic floor coating.

Sealers are great if you’re okay with paying the price to have someone come and redo it once a year, and you’re just looking for just a little bit of a glossy look on top of your concrete floor.

If you’re looking for more of a colored finish, then you can either get into your epoxies or you can get into the polyurea and polyaspartic coatings, or your epoxies. The latter (epoxy coating) are going to be a multiple-day process to install because there’s cure times in between each layer that you want to do, and you can do multiple layers — as many as you want.

For an epoxy coating, the standard is usually between two and three hours.

Then there is a polyurea-polyaspartic coating. It’s a two-part system, that is all done by us in just one day. For example, today we’re out in Novi doing a garage floor with polyurea-polyaspartic coating. That’s our bread and butter. Our guys are getting the color “Pebble Beach” done on the clients’ floor. It’s a two-car garage around 450 square feet, and it’s about 2:13PM. Our guys are going to be finishing up the floor in about an hour or so.”

Key takeaways: Fastest floor coating to install in a 450 sq. ft. garage

  • Sealers are fast to install but need to be redone once a year
  • Epoxy is slow to install: each layer needs to cure for 2-3 hours
  • The polyurea + polyaspartic coating combo can be installed in just 1 day

Motorcity Floors and Coatings prefers a combination of polyurea coating and polyaspartic coating because of its properties: very good longevity, light clean-up, UV stability, salt resistance, beautiful appearance. We offer a large palette of colors, from neutral to dense hues. Your brand-new floor will be easy to look at, easy to work on, and easy to live with.
